Instructor Bio: Jan Slaten Bio Name: Jan Slaten Lives in: Des Moines, Iowa Education: Bachelor?s degree in Finance, Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa Quilting since: I made my first 3 quilts in 1975 but didn?t quilt again until 1994. Teaching quilting since: 2008. Sharing my quilting knowledge with others is very rewarding. I love being a part of the beginner quilter enthusiasm. Favorite techniques: Hand and machine appliqu? and the latest technique I have learned. Design philosophy: I like find ways to make traditional blocks look new by incorporating them with other blocks and techniques. Background: I come from a family of quilters going back several generations but it took a trip to Paducah with Mom & sister for the quilting bug to bite - and it bit hard! Since then, I have made many of my own designs. My sister and I had our own pattern line under the name Platte Branch Design for about 10 years but we no longer operate the business. Family: Although I do not have children, I have one extremely spoiled, bossy & loveable Jack Russell terrier mix named Dottie. She has a very lively personality and keeps me moving. Activities and interests: Quilting retreats with my sisters, bicycling, gardening and time with family & friends.
